Supervalu introduces compostable shopping bags
Supervalu become first Irish supermarket to offer compostable reusable shopping bag
The retailer says this will result in a over 2.5 million plastic bags being removed from circulation throughout Ireland. Their new shopping bag, introduced last year, has been produced from a various renewable materials, will be available from early September this year, costing shoppers 89c.
A Supervalu spokesperson said: “When the bag has been used as many times as possible and is ready for the bin it can be disposed of in the brown bin that is found in most homes and many businesses and is this will be completely recycled and broken down turning into water and CO2 within 90 days.”
In 2019, Supervalu’s replaced single-use plastic bags for most of their fruit and veg range opting for fully compostable bags.
The retailer has already replaced 113 tonnes of plastic from fruit and veg packaging eliminating plastic where possible and introducing compostable alternatives. The company has a mission to make 100% of its own brand and fresh fruit and vegetable packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.
